Please congratulate senior Sam Witz and junior Priya Shah! Last weekend, at the IHSA Sectional Speech Tournament, Sam and Priya qualified for State. They will perform at the Peoria Civic Center, in competition, this coming Friday and Saturday.
To qualify for State, a student must rank among the Top Three finalists at Sectionals in any given Speech category. Sam took 2nd Place overall in the category of Prose Reading, and 3rd Place overall in Original Oratory. Priya took 3rd Place overall in Radio Broadcasting. Bartlett has never sent more than two Speech competitors to State at one time. Sam's and Priya's achievements are very special.
The Speech and Drama Team as a whole did very well at Sectionals, taking 6th Place overall out of 22 teams in competition. Eight BHS competitors earned spots in the Sectional Final Round and narrowly missed the cutoff for State qualification: Natalie Payne (Dramatic Duet Acting), Chester Hall (Dramatic Duet Acting), Peter Devereux (Extemporaneous Speaking), Evan Neilson (Humorous Duet Acting), Jared Zavala (Humorous Duet Acting and Original Comedy), and Shayna Chacko (Oratorical Declamation). This is the best BHS has ever placed at an IHSA Sectional in Speech. Furthermore, Speechwire, the website that compiles competitive speech, debate, and competitive drama records, released their "power rankings" ("Team Strength") going into State. Bartlett is ranked 31st out of over 100 schools that initially entered the IHSA State Series.
Wish Sam and Priya the very best of luck at they march to Peoria!
