Dear Agawam Public Schools Families:
Over the past several years, Agawam Public Schools has worked to develop and practice a comprehensive District Safety Plan. The purpose of this plan is to ensure that all students and staff enjoy a safe and healthy school environment. We have set guidelines and procedures for a variety of serious situations ranging from the need to lock down a school to the need for evacuation and the reunification of families.
We have been preparing and training our staff with the assistance of our local police, fire, and emergency management departments. In addition, each school has formed a School Safety Team whose members are prepared to assist students, staff, and visitors in case of an emergency taking place during school hours. Because our teachers and other school staff have been trained in procedures for lockdowns and evacuation, we are confident that Agawam Public Schools is a safe place for everyone.
At times during the past, you may have heard through social media or Connect Ed, that emergency service was required at one of our schools. If an emergency should take place at your child’s school, please do not rush to the school site or call the school office. In the event of a real safety situation or safety drill, no one will be allowed to enter or to leave the school. There will be no exceptions to this procedure, and we apologize in advance if this rule causes any inconvenience. However this procedure was developed by the State Safety Task Force to ensure that the proper procedure for student release and accountability is followed so all students remain safe.
The Agawam Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Management Office have worked collaboratively with the school department to develop specific plans, which detail where families may go to receive information and updates in the case of a true emergency. If a true safety emergency should arise, you will be notified about the emergency and the location of reunification sites through Connect Ed phone messages, the police department, and the media. That is why it is imperative that your child’s school has all of your emergency information and contact numbers. These reunification locations will not be announced in advanced so that we can ensure the safety of all involved.
The safety of students, their families, and school personnel is of the utmost importance to us. We ask that you help us to ensure the safety of all by cooperating with our procedures and by encouraging your children to do the same. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school principal.
Thank you for your trust and cooperation as we strive to make Agawam Public Schools a safe place for students to learn and grow.
