FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

B-SSD 2nd Annual Career and College Readiness Expo A Huge Success

Blairsville, PA – The Blairsville-Saltsburg School District’s 2nd Annual Career and College Readiness Expo (CaCRE), on Thursday, October 11th at the Saltsburg Middle/High School campus.  By all accounts from the various stakeholder groups that were represented it was a huge success.  The Expo was strategically focused on the district’s ninth and eleventh grade students from both campuses, including direct business and industry networking linkages for students within the 16 nationally recognized career pathways.

The day included keynote addresses from both the Deputy Secretary of Education, Matt Stem as well as the Secretary of Labor and Industry Jerry Oleksiak.  They delivered poignant and eloquent joint messages related to education, closing the skills gap through strategic workforce development in concert with the theme of apprenticeships in Pennsylvania.  Parent/Guardians of the district’s 9th and 11th grade students also attended during a special mid-morning session.

Each of the 210 students had their personalized Expo touring schedule.  They visited several businesses related to their individual career interests with a transitional pathway to post-secondary representatives for those careers requiring post-graduation education and/or training.  This was an excellent opportunity for both students and their parents to network with businesses and post-secondary institutions that are aligned with their child’s career interests.

The business and industry exhibitors included in alphabetical order: Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, the Builders Guild/IBEW; Carpenters Union 423 KLM; Clark Metal; Cloudcast; Comcast; Excela Health; Hilton Garden Inn; H&W Global; Indiana Boro Police; Indiana County DA; Indiana County Jail; Indiana County Tourist Bureau; Indiana Armstrong Builders Association; IUP Education Department; McNaughton Brothers; Mercedes Benz USA, MGK/Miller Welding; Penn DOT; Seven Springs Mountain Resort; S&T Bank; St. Andrew's Village; St. Francis University’s Chris Miller; and Westinghouse.  The post-secondary institutions being represented are: Indiana University of Pennsylvania; LaRoche; Penn College of Technology; Universal Technical Institute (UTI); University of Pittsburgh; and Westmoreland County Community College.

The day concluded with a round-table discussion with both Deputy Secretary Stem and Secretary Oleksiak.  Also engaged at the table were district school board president, Mr. Rick Harper; County Commissioners Sherene Hess and Rodney Ruddock; as well as Chamber of Commerce president, Jim Struzzi.  Representing our industry and post-secondary partners were: Tony Strini, Clark Metal Products; Dick Clawson, Indiana-Armstrong Home Builders Association; and Andy Kunselman, Universal Technical Institute.  This discussion was fruitful and highly productive as the members discussed a wide variety of topics related to workforce development and the skills gap through their businesses or organization lenses.
