Social Security Administration
For a complete discussion of your personal benefits, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) in January of the year you wish to retire--during the year you reach your full retirement age. You should consider different options available that might provide additional benefits to you and your family. Contact SSA at least three (3) months before the month you want to start receiving benefits. You may call 1-(800) 772-1213 or the TTY number for the deaf or hard of hearing 1-(800) 325-0778 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, to set up an appointment.
When you retire from the District and are Medicare Parts A & B eligible, your Brevard Public Schools (BPS) medical insurance becomes a secondary insurance to Medicare. To receive the lower Medicare rate for your BPS retiree medical insurance, you must provide a copy of your Medicare card, with the Part A & B eligible dates, prior to your last day of employment. If you wait until the last minute to contact Social Security, your Medicare enrollment might be delayed, and you might have to pay higher BPS insurance premiums.
To apply for Medicare Part B, you should contact Social Security three (3) months before your last day of employment. To apply call 1-(800) 772-1213 or the TTY number for the deaf or hard of hearing 1-(800) 325-0778 Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
