Askin / Kidd Vietnam $500 Essay Scholarship
In 2015, The Dept. of Defense established the Vietnam War Commemoration marking the 50th Anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson sending combat troops into Vietnam. The commemoration was designed to bring honor and pay tribute to those who served in Vietnam: those living Vietnam Veterans, POWs and their families.
In partnership with this program, in December, 2015, Charlotte High School and CCPS honored some of its 124 veterans who served in the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1973, with a “Welcome Home Charlotte County Vietnam Veterans” event and special exhibit that is still on display. Two of our alumni, Capt. George Kidd (USAF), and Petty Officer James Askin (USN Corpsman), were killed in action. Their names appear on the Vietnam Memorial Wall with six other Charlotte County residents.
