Cocoa Beach High School in Cocoa Beach Honored For Their Leadership in Service

Viera, FL April 21, 2017- The Jefferson Awards-Deloitte Students in Action (SIA) program is proud to announce that Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School has been selected as the Central Florida  Recipient For Outstanding Service By a High School and will represent Central Florida at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony and Gala Event in Washington, DC, June 21-23. Cocoa Beach was selected at the 2017 Regional Competition held Thursday in Viera. They were chosen by a panel of local judges for their Leadership, Engagement and Impact around service in their school and for their philanthropic contribution to the community. They have helped to pave the way for greater volunteerism throughout Central Florida.

During the 2016-2017 school year the Cocoa Beach SIA team lived their vision statement of making a lasting impact upon the lives of others and their belief in service above self. They centered their service work around their vision which impacted the lives of many people both in their community and across the globe.  Just a few of the projects they did this year included raising funds for a young girl in Uganda through ChildFund to provide her with food, clean water, education and health services, creating a petting zoo for children with special needs, and raising over $1,400.00 for their annual “Secret Santa” project providing 10 of their peers with Christmas gifts they would not otherwise receive. The team also collected and donated 200 lbs. of food, 700 lbs.  of recycling, over 146 toys and gifts, 500 books, as well as serving 294 meals, and volunteering their time at local beach clean ups and with Habitat for Humanity. Through all their efforts this year the Cocoa Beach SIA team tracked over 23,000 service hours in their school which has had a financial impact of over $543,000 to the community.

The Jefferson Awards High Schools throughout Central Florida documented 304,000 hours of community service which represents over $7.1M of financial impact to the region. The schools that participated in the competition this year included: Bayside High School, Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School, Cornerstone Charter Academy, Eustis High School, Leesburg High School, Mt. Dora High School and Oviedo High School.

The Jefferson Awards Students in Action is currently operating in 400 high schools nationwide and in 13 regions: Boston, Chicago, Delaware, Central Florida, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Jersey, New York, Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Bay Area, South Carolina and Toledo.
