  • Kimball Junior High opened in 1959 with around 400 students in grades 7 & 8. Construction cost around $1.5 million.
  • The following year, the school expanded to grades 7, 8 & 9.
  • The school was named after the Kimball family who, in 1834, were the first settlers on the west side of Elgin.
  • The Kimballs had the first birth, first death and first marriage in Elgin.
  • The Kimballs owned a furniture and rug store in Elgin for 117 years. It closed shortly before the school opened in 1959.
  • The school has had three major additions:
    • 1960 – Five rooms on the second floor were added at the north end of the building over the industrial education rooms.
    • 1998 – Six classrooms in the East Wing, a teacher’s lounge and an auxiliary gym were added. The office and library were expanded. Air conditioning was also added.
    • 2003 – Four classrooms, a new library with computer lab and a cafeteria expansion formed a new West Wing. The auditorium and gym were completely renovated, including new bleachers, a new floor and new lockers. The renovation cost nearly $10 million.
  • Kimball was a junior high with grades 7, 8 & 9 from 1959-1982.
  • Kimball became a middle school with grades 7 & 8 in 1983.
  • The school has had only three principals since opening:
    • Ross Hulmes – 20 years (1959 - 1980)
    • Dave Covey – 20 years (1980 – 2000)
    • Al Tamburrino – 10 years (2000 – present)
  • The school has had only five assistant principals since opening:
    • Wayne Block – 21 years (1959 – 1981)
    • Luis Cabrera – 5 years (1981 – 1986)
    • Mike Rehberg – 14 years (1986 – 2000)
    • Jackie Irizarry – 3 years (2000 – 2003)
    • Kerry Sund – 7 years (2003 – present)
  • The school has had only three head secretaries since opening:
    • Mrs. Billings – 3 years (1959 – 1963)
    • Mrs. Homfeldt – 14 years (1963 – 1977)
    • Mrs. Carlson – 33 years (1977 – present)
  • Kimball was one of the first U-46 middle schools to have a Bilingual Program (1979-1980) and currently has around 140 students in the program.
  • Kimball has hosted the U-46 School-Within-A-School Gifted Program since the late 1990s.
  • Kimball hosted a surprise concert for its students and staff in February 2008, when the pop group The Jonas Brothers performed in the school gym.
  • Kimball peaked in enrollment with 969 students in 2004. The 2013-14 enrollment was 671 students.
