Karen Hughes has served in a teaching as well as an administrative capacity exclusively in the Lacey Township School District. Karen has been employed in the Lacey School District for 31 years. She was hired in 1985 after earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from Montclair State University as a Physical Education/ Health Instructor. She has also coached softball and field hockey at the high school level. After 19 years of classroom instruction and coaching, and a return to college to pursue her Master’s Degree in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum Planning from Georgian Court University in 2001, she was hired in 2004 as the High School's Athletic Director and remained in that position until 2011. Thereafter she took on the responsibility of the Middle School Athletics and now oversees athletics in the district, grades 7-12. Additionally she is the Supervisor of Physical Education/ Health in the high school.
As Athletic Director, she was responsible for adding many new sports teams to the athletics program including Men’s and Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Golf and Ice Hockey. Additionally, she has added junior varsity and freshman levels to already existing programs. She firmly believes that athletics are vitally important to the positive growth and development, physically, socially and emotionally of all students. The challenge she most embraces is offering as many co-curricular involvement opportunities for as many students as possible.
In her personal life she is an avid runner, biker, participant in mini triathlons and has completed five marathons. She has also officiated basketball and softball at the high school and collegiate levels. She enjoys spending time with her son and staying fit.
