U-46 Reminds Families of Safety Procedures for Viewing Aug. 21 Solar Eclipse

As we prepare for the solar eclipse, expected to occur between noon and 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 21, we wanted to share some Districtwide safety procedures in place for that day.

  • There will be no outdoor recess or physical education between noon and 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21.
  • Physical education classes will continue outside until 11:45 a.m. and inside during the afternoon.
  • Only teachers who have undergone School District U-46 professional development and training and have received a parental waiver will lead students outside in proper and safe viewing activities.

Note the eclipse will be damaging to vision only if an individual stares directly at the sun.

The District for several months has been offering professional development about the upcoming eclipse for teachers and administrators. We invite you to watch the training video we have provided our staff and community.  To view the video enter 00000 as the employee ID.

Parents, if your child is participating in viewing opportunities and lessons, we ask that you remind them to please follow his or her teacher’s instructions and guidelines for safe viewing.

School dismissal time will not change. The eclipse will be nearly over by dismissal time.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.
