Universal CogAT Screening
Between October 2 – 16, 2017 all District U-46 sixth grade students will participate in the Gifted universal screening process. We will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test 7 (CogAT 7) during the school day. While current sixth grade IGNITE and Dual IGNITE students will participate in the screening, their continued participation is automatic, they advance to Middle School Gifted.
Universal CogAT screening of current third graders took place in the Spring of 2017. Those third graders who did not participate will test in October. The results from spring 2017 have not been shared with parents as the CogAT is only one component of the gifted screening with takes place this fall.
Parents of all students who tested will be provided CogAT results with gifted notification in late November.
Students residing in the district who are not currently enrolled can register for testing by calling the Gifted Office (847-888-5000 x5356) by Oct. 9th.
Informational meetings for parents will be held at 6:00 p.m. on October 3rd at Bartlett High School and repeated on October 5th at Larkin High School. The Gifted overview is to provide all parents with foundation knowledge on gifted services. Presentations will be offered in both English and Spanish.
Academy Open Houses and Applications
Academy Open Houses will be held at each U-46 high school on September 18th & 19th. Sessions begin at 7:00 p.m. and repeat at 8:15 p.m. The Open Houses are designed for seventh and eighth grade students and their parents to learn more about how the high school academies will prepare students for success after high school. Eighth graders may submit academy applications online starting September 18th. Completed applications are due on or before October 16th.

Seal of Biliteracy - April, 2017
The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy is an award bestowed by the Illinois State Board of Education in recognition and celebration of students who have attained a high level of proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The state of Illinois officially adopted the Seal of Biliteracy in 2013.
District U-46 is pleased to offer this opportunity to our students. Testing is open to high school students with testing costs covered by the district. The Seal of Biliteracy allows students to earn college credit.
U-46 students and their parents are invited to attend an informational meeting on April 11 or April 13, 2017 at Educational Services Center, 2nd Floor Auditorium, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. View the Seal of Biliteracy powerpoint, ISBE website, and AAPPL website.
Second Grade Gifted Screening - March, 2017
Between March 7 -17, 2017 all District U-46 second grade students will participate in the Gifted universal screening process. We will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test 7 (CogAT 7) during the school day. Specific dates will be available from your child’s school.
Only the CogAT will take place in March. The identification process for the elementary program will be completed in the Fall of 2017. At that time each child’s comprehensive student profile will be evaluated by the District U-46 Gifted Identification Committee. The committee will identify students who are in need of gifted and talented services. Decisions and CogAT scores will be mailed to all parents in the Fall of 2017. Students identified for Gifted Services will begin the program in fourth grade.
CogAT Make-up Testing - March 7 - 17, 2017

Each child’s comprehensive student profile will be evaluated by the District U-46 Gifted Identification Committee. The committee will identify students who are in need of gifted and talented services. Decisions will be mailed to all parents.
Gifted Advisory Meeting - February 9, 2017
All parents are welcome to attend the next meeting of the Gifted Advisory Committee on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. This committee supports the gifted department and provides essential feedback about academies and gifted programming. Michele Kane, Ed.D. will be our guest speaker. Her presentation will further explore the educational and social/emotional needs of the gifted, with an emphasis on the role of parents.
Michele is a Professor and Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Gifted Education Program at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. She has served the gifted community as a public school district gifted coordinator and in leadership positions within both the Illinois and National Association for Gifted Children.
Dual Language Ignite program sites - December 22, 2016
Ronald D. O’Neal & Ridge Circle Elementary schools will house the Dual Language IGNITE program next year. Families of current 3rd graders identified for the program have been notified of their child’s site assignment. Students who will be attending Ronald D. O’Neal have attended an Open House at the school and those who will attend Ridge Circle may visit the school on Wednesday, January 11th from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Ridge Circle families are asked to submit their acceptance forms by January 18th.
High School Academies - December 22, 2016
Results of High School Academies were mailed to all applicants on December 19th. All who completed the application process will receive a letter in US Mail. Invited students must submit their acceptance form by January 9th.
Middle School Dual Language Gifted - December 16, 2016
Sites have been identified for the Middle School Dual Language Program. Families of invited students will be notified of their child's site assignment through US Mail. The return date for Acceptance forms from these students has been extended to January 9th. All other Middle School acceptance forms are due December 19th.
