Sixth Street School is the oldest public school site in New Mexico. It holds a position in the pioneer struggle to bring free quality education to the State’s children. The original school building was built 1882. It then received recognition as the first public school by the territorial Legislature of New Mexico. Since then the school has been the site of continuous public education for over one hundred and twenty eight years.
Present Sixth Street incorporates Grades K-5, with two "El Grito" Pre-K Classes also housed on campus. There are twenty six staff members. The school has met AYP, or the State Mandated Academic Goal, for the 2010 School Year.
