Welcome to Grade 5 Computers! We look forward to another wonderful year of computing fun. We will be working with the classroom teachers to develop projects that will enhance the technology skills of the students.Most of our technology projects are be tied directly into the regular curriculum, giving students the opportunity to utilize technology in authentic situations.   Students use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Map programs, Timeliner, Electronic sources, the Internet, and various other programs to complete their projects.  Students take online tests, create interactive projects, reinforce classroom skills, and conduct research.

        Specific examples include creating a presentation based on a book read in class that includes a map to trace the journey and a character analysis; completing a WebQuest about volcanoes; creating a “Greek Gazette” in which each small group researches and writes an article as if they were living in ancient Greece; reinforcing time telling skills by working on an interactive web page; designing a story map that includes the major elements of a book; merging a database with a letter using style elements from the language arts curriculum; performing virtual (as well as real) dissections; taking online tests; reviewing vocabulary words with online flash cards; and computing discounts using a spreadsheet.

           The classroom computers are available for student research, interactive reading comprehension testing, skill reinforcement, and teacher tools such as review sheet and test generation, and report cards. We are fortunate to have two complete labs, a laptop lab, and classroom computers for the students to use.  Since technology is infused into every subject, students are learning how these tools can be used in real-world situations in an ethical and responsible manner. As the year progresses, we will publish our "TechBytes" to keep you informed about the activities and skills we have worked on each quarter.
