During the course of the year students will be introduced to different aspects of writing and grammar. We will study in great depth grammar usage and mechanics, the writing process, various types of writing, and effective speaking and listening skills. Sentence diagramming will be covered thoroughly throughout the course of the school year. We will also study aspects of vocabulary which consist of definitions, sentence completion, synonyms and antonyms, word selection, parts of speech, and vocabulary in context. Students will explore these topics in-depth through classroom instruction, activities, homework, writing assignments, speeches, and cooperative learning. Seventh grade students will be required to complete a research paper which we will begin early in the school year and complete during the third quarter. Through the research paper students will partake in an extensive study, learning, and application of the research process according to MLA guidelines. In conjunction to this paper, students will begin public speaking in which an electronic speech portfolio will be kept at school in order for students to watch and learn from their mistakes via videotaped speeches. We will also work on and compose a Diocesan Persuasive essay which will be done completely during class time. Furthermore, we will delve into the world of creative writing through the composition of a number of short essays.
