Thornton Burgess Middle School!
Thornton Waldo Burgess, was born in Sandwich, MA, June 14, 1874. Despite growing up in extreme poverty, Burgess stated his childhood was “idyllic.” Burgess developed his appreciation for the environment while investigating the ponds, meadows and marshes of Cape Cod. Unable to attend college because of expense, Burgess worked hard to become a writer, authoring some fifty-four volumes of children’s stories, an autobiography and thirty-two other books. By 1960, Burgess had retired from writing. He died in Hampden, MA, on June 5, 1965.
