To the Community of Valdez,
Thank you for making the beginning of our school year a success! I appreciate everyone’s involvement and awareness as to what it takes for a successful start. With the added bike/car/bus/pedestrian traffic on the roads again, it absolutely requires each of us to heighten our awareness during school hours.
The District is exposed to new staff at all levels/buildings. Newly hired para’s, custodians/maintenance, foodservice, as well as administrators/directors make this year’s start-up a bit more challenging than most. I am happy to say, however, that on all fronts it was a successful beginning.
As the new superintendent for Valdez I’d like to share a bit of my own background. I am entering my 35th year in education. I started out my career as an elementary and middle school teacher for 10 years, an elementary and middle school principal for 9 years, and I am now entering my 16th year as a superintendent. I maintain a home in Montana . . . home of my children (2) and grandchildren (3). My wife and I have both been impressed with the friendliness of the staff as well as the overall community of Valdez. It is fun getting out to the many activities the community provides.
I have been blessed in my career with great students and staff to work with. I can say with confidence that Valdez will top any of my career’s best experiences as an educator. Student performance blended with high community expectations is a great combination! I am happy to be part of Valdez and Valdez City Schools! I love all the adventures that Valdez and Alaska have to offer. An outdoorsman at heart, I look forward to the weekends with heightened enthusiasm as opportunities to explore Valdez and surrounding areas.
I am excited to get to know the community over the next several years. I maintain an “open-door” policy and will adjust my schedule to meet yours at any time should you ever have the need to visit. Please feel free to stop by at any time!
Jim Nygaard, Superintendent
