Greetings Valdez City Schools Stakeholders,
With our 3rd quarter well under way, it is time to take note of the importance of this critical quarter of school. Now that the students/teachers are into a well-established routine it is important to note that this quarter is the most accurate “snapshot” of our student’s educational year. It is for this reason the state mandated tests are taken during this time (as well as the state level student surveys). It is also a challenging quarter, with limited time off until our scheduled spring break (March 13). Your continued support/expectation of your child’s studies during this quarter is paramount.
The school district will be participating in the “Youth Risk Behavior Survey” and the “School Climate and Connectedness Survey” (YRBS and SCCS) in the coming weeks. The YRBS requires specific parental permission in order to give the survey. Without adequate parent returned permissions Valdez Schools will not get back site specific data, rather we will be included in a generic state summary. This data gives our district specific target areas to work towards regarding our student’s needs. I encourage you to support the request for your children to participate in these surveys. Any questions, or desire of a draft of the previous surveys…please visit with your child’s principal, or building counselor, or Lea Cockerham of VHS.
The District is interested in developing and maintaining a summer school program for our students. Although the focus will be mainly with primary and intermediate grade levels, research shows that students at all levels can benefit from such a program. Areas we are studying for this early “pilot” include: How many students, and how would we select them (as it would be a program that is by invite only), how would this program fit into our summer schedule (which month and how many weeks long) as it is critical that the students also have the opportunity to enjoy their summer break. More later…
The district is asking the public’s input on evaluating our principals as well as myself. It is important to note the value of public input during this process. Principal and Superintendent evaluations are available electronically on the District’s website and in hard copy form at your children’s schools beginning February 1st. The deadline for returning the evaluation is Feb 23.
Thank you for your continued support ofj Valdez City Schools.
Superintendent of Schools
