Greetings Parents/Students and Stakeholders of Valdez City Schools,
For many, it may be difficult to accept that we are into the final quarter of school already. Even more difficult to imagine may be the thoughts of replacement staff already hired and student scheduling completed for next fall. Before we get too far ahead however, I need to acknowledge all parties for the success of this past school year. Challenging weather, new student testing tool/protocol, multiple student activities, new building adjustment, 2 new principals to acclimate to…and the list goes on. None of these successes could be realized however without your support.
As we prepare for tomorrow’s funding challenges, please note that ongoing budget conversations do not include reducing any services to any students. In fact, Valdez Schools is cautiously moving forward with conversations including increasing preschool by one-hour daily, development of a summer school pilot program for elementary aged students, and are currently looking at increased after school activities for students district-wide.
To successfully meet the many challenges of the federal government, we need to think comfortably “out of the box” with our partnerships. Especially with the city and the college, such partnerships/exposure is not typically available with-in the classrooms of our schools. Look to see additional partnerships cultured with the upcoming career fair at our middle school and high school April 30th.
And finally, as we wrap up school year ’14-15, we also prepare to say good- bye to the following teachers: Ms. Rhonda Wagner, Ms. Brianne Kimberlin, Ms. Lesley Rogers, Ms. Mary Katherine Ade, Ms. Judy Almy, Mr. Keith Kyker and Ms. Denni Haase-Bushong. These staff represent nearly 75 years of teaching experiences that will be challenging to replace.
Look to see the board’s approved calendar on our website. School is scheduled to begin for students August 17th next fall (Monday). My door is always open to stakeholders as we move forward. Funding challenges, policy development, staffing questions…collectively we can successfully address each. Thanks for your support this past year. Enjoy your summer break!
