Grades K - 6 Therapeutic Program
INTRODUCTION TO THE K - 6 GRADES THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM
Welcome to the Waseca Area Schools Therapeutic Program (WASTP) in the Waseca Junior & Senior High School.
We are a school-based program providing access to community-based mental health services in conjunction with integrated special education planning. The purpose of this program is to strengthen individual and family functioning while preventing students from requiring more restrictive services.
Students identified as eligible for special education and related services need an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) developed to address his or her unique needs.
Students need to receive services in the least restrictive setting possible, thus this program may be part of continuum of services a child may receive during his or her educational career.
The WASTP is not a Children’s Day Treatment program, as it does not operate 12 months a year and is not licensed as such, as under the Department of Human Services regulations (http://www.dhs.state.mn.us/main/idcplg?IdcService=GET_DYNAMIC_CONVERSION&RevisionSelectionMethod=LatestReleased&dDocName=id_059393#).
Nonetheless, the program provides the following therapeutic aspects to all participants:
· Education in small classes with an emphasis on individual instruction;
· Individual therapy;
· Group therapy;
· Crisis prevention and interventions;
· Social skills development;
· Behavior management, with emphasis on positive behavioral supports;
· Strong emphasis on communication with Interdisciplinary Team members, including families and caregivers.
