Welcome to West Shore's
Small Learning Communities

The Community Action Program (CAP) is a Small Learning Community (SLC) that is designed to create positive lifelong relationships between faculty and students that foster student growth in the areas of academic achievement, career planning, service learning, responsible citizenship and character education.

Each grade level project will allow students to take their learning to a new dimension and will produce a real, concrete outcome for positive change. At the beginning of the year, each CAP teacher will provide lessons and facilitate discussions in preparation for the service project action. Students will then plan and execute their service project at school or in the community. Throughout the service learning project, students will have an opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned and in the end they will produce a product to demonstrate their learning. Finally, they will review what worked and what improvements could be made in the curriculum for the following year.

Each service learning project experience will be a vital component for preparing students to take a productive role in society. The students will also benefit in the areas of academic performance, values, self efficacy, and leadership.
