Junior Kindergarten is now being implemented in all NWT communities.
There have been some start-up challenges. Most boards are not
offering JK bussing - partly due to safety concerns and partly due to the
fact that the government did not provide new money for transportation.
Many classroom renovations are behind schedule due to the late June
JK implementation announcement. Boards have created makeshift classrooms and principals and teachers are making things work for the four
year olds. The government is exploring school board sharing of servi
ces – eg. centralizing purchasing and tech support and maintenance.
The government lowered the placement of superintendents and assistant superintendents on the Hay pay scale. This resulted in some large
school principals making more than assistant superintendents. As a result some boards are having a hard time filling assistant superintendent positions. One solution has been to hire district principals instead of assistant superintendents.
