Power Hour is an after school tutoring program made possible by a grant from the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund. Students from Lakewood Ranch High School volunteer to tutor B. D. Gullett Elementary third grade students every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for one hour.
After the high school tutors are trained, they are paired one-on-one with the Gullett students who need extra help in the area of reading. The high school students tutor Gullett students in reading fluency, reading comprehension and decoding skills. The program has positive results for all participants. Gullett students show improvement in reading skills and their confidence in reading is enhanced. Lakewood Ranch High School volunteers gain experience working with children and earn community service hours needed for graduation.
