6th and 7th grade families,
We are pleased to announce that we have chosen PEAK by Roland Smith as our 2015 One Book summer reading. It is an emotional, tension-filled story of a 14 year-old boy’s attempt to be the youngest person to reach the top of Mount Everest. This action-packed adventure about friendship, sacrifice, family, and the drive to take on Everest is a novel that our middle school readers won’t be able to put down! PEAK won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award. We were focused on this book before the Nepal earthquakes and obviously this tragedy has brought this area of the world even more into our cultural focus. We are also very excited that the book will lend itself pretty easily to social studies, science, and other content area curricular connections….even math!
Upon returning to school in the fall, students will be required to write an essay based on the book in their ELA classes. The author, Roland Smith, will be visiting Birchland Park in October for a day of assemblies and a workshop.
We are offering students the option of purchasing the book through the school until June 4th. All prepaid orders will be delivered to students before the end of the school year. The cost of the book through BPMS will be $6.40. It is also available on Kindle, Nook, and iTunes. After the deadline of June 4, students will be responsible for purchasing the book on their own.
Birchland students are also encouraged to continue independent reading throughout the summer! We will be providing a voluntary reading challenge in addition to PEAK for students to maintain and enhance their skills during the summer in the form of a BINGO game. An iPad mini has been donated as a grand prize. More information will come home with final report cards!!
