World Languages Department
Four languages are offered at Catholic Memorial: French, German, Latin, and Spanish. All are currently offered for a four-year sequence with fifth year courses available depending on enrollment. Study of a language expands the student's knowledge base in many ways. In World Language courses students are exposed to the cultural perspective and heritage of the language they are learning. In addition, exposure to the culture's art, music, and literature is incorporated into the course study.
Opportunities for education travel are available to students of French, German, Latin, and Spanish to increase the knowledge of culture and facility of the language. The French program has a 15-day spring program which combines travel within France and a 5-day familiy stay. An American-German exchange of three weeks during the summer is availab e to interested students. The Latin Department is pursuing a 10-day trip to Italy during the summer. This trip would run every other year. In addition, students taking Spanish have the opportunity to participate in a 14-day service-learning trip to Panama during the summer. While in Panama students will have an 11-day home say accompanied by 20 hours of service at the Nutre Hogar medical clinic.
